Item Details
Description
mid 19th century, 281 x 152 cm, North West Anatolia
The red field of this rare carpet from the Bergama area features three large medallions whose shape and interior design is reminiscent of Turkmen guls. The lateral pairs of triangles protruding into the free spaces between the primary motifs are a characteristic feature of many Anatolian rugs. The wide white main border is decorated with diagonal crosses composed of serrated leaves.
Slight signs of age and wear in the pile, partially repiled upper finish, the original selvedges survive.
