BERNTSSON, SONNY, Balkans and Back. Monastir Prayer Rugs. In: HALI 112, London 2000
This white-ground Monastir prayer rug has a field design consisting of small rosettes above and below a pointed triangular arch. The cruciforms in the similarly white-ground main border have striking wing-like arms.
The design, style of drawing and loose weave make these Monastir rugs easy to identify as they differ clearly from other Turkish work. They were woven by a Turkish group in Macedonia who were resettled in Anatolia after 1920 (Treaty of Sevres) with the restructuring of the former Ottoman Empire. A report published in HALI deals with this interesting special group.
Good condition, original finishes all around.
