Description
mid 19th century, 123 x 97 cm, East Caucasus
BENARDOUT, RAYMOND, Antique Rugs. London 1983, no. 32
RIPPON BOSWELL, FFM 24, 15 November 1986, lot 33
Blue-ground Shirvan prayer rugs are very rare. Here the ground colour of the field is a royal blue shade. The wide arch right at the upper end is red, as are the fine lines of the diamond lattice. The white border with its highly abstract bird‘s head motifs forms a lively contrast. The very fine weave, dense pile and finely coordinated colours probably date this gorgeous example to the middle of the 19th century. Benardout has published a related piece, but described it as "Dagestan".
Completely preserved, with the original sides and the white kilim finishes. Somewhat sinuous. A number of restored creases. Pile in good condition.
