Description
This lot consists of an antique oil painting on board framed in an antique ornate gilt frame (with chipping and loss to upper left corner). A gilt metal name plate is affixed to the bottom inside frame which reads" J.M. William. Turner 1775 - 1851". This piece is delicately executed in the Romantic style of landscape painter Joseph Mallord William (J.M.W.) Turner (1775 - 1851). This is a scene of the river as viewed from the shore, with the right side depicting three men in a rowboat moving toward a group of ships with sails, the left side has two figures behind barrels and long shovel or paddle. An outline of buildings and ships can be perceived in a hazy background. White clouds dot the sky. Framed = 21.75" x 25.5" / Sight = 13.5" x 16.5"
Printed paper labels are attached to the top of the back side, with a red wax stamp between the two. The largest of the labels reads "The Boydell Galleries" in Liverpool, the smaller provides the name of the artist, the title of work and the statement "Bought 1954 from Pillips for" 3,600" (price is written in). Piece is titled "Shipping On The River Thames".
