This lot consists of a hand-rendered oil painting on canvas, with "Bernard Buffet" hand written by the artist in oil at upper right. Image depicts a clown with a serious expression, covered in makeup and festive attire. The piece, rich with color and line, is done in the recognizable Expressionist style of the prolific painter and portraitist, Bernard Buffet (French, 1928-1999). This unframed piece measures approximately 13.75" x 9.75".

Painting is accompanied by a detailed Certificate of Authenticity, which states, "The item(s) has been carefully examined. The individual parameters of the submitted item(s)/examined object meet my standards of identification and have been compared to various accepted catalogue exemplars, with which similiarities were found. Based on inherent characteristics of the item(s) and when comparing to known real exemplars it is my belief that this artwork is attributable to the above mentioned artist [Bernard Buffet]. The item(s) has been inspected on 10 January, 2005, by chief examiner and art historian Dr. Phil Arthur Steinmeyer" [Steinmeyer Gallery, Munich, Germany]. The Certificate of Authenticity attributes this oil on canvas to Bernard Buffet (French, 1928-1999), describing the piece as being in "fine condition".
