Description
This lot consists of a mixed media drawing on paper, attributed to Art Nouveau painter Gustav Klimt (Austrian, 1862-1918). "Gustav Klimt Nachlass" hand written at bottom right of composition. Image depicts a nude long-haired brunette woman. The woman's long beautiful hair falls gracefully over her partially exposed breast. Drawing is done in the sensual, expressionist style for which Klimt is so well known. This framed piece measures approximately 15.5" x 12.5", with an image sight of approximately 13.5" x 10.5".
Paper label affixed en verso reads "SERGE SABARSKY GALLERY" along with a New York City address. Label goes on to read "Gustav Klimt" "Study for Bethoven Frieze". Bottom of backing has a foreign, possibly Austrian, pencil inscription.
Gustav Klimt (July 14, 1862 – February 6, 1918) was an Austrian symbolist painter and one of the most prominent members of the Vienna Secession movement. Klimt is noted for his paintings, murals, sketches, and other objets d'art. Klimt's primary subject was the female body, and his works are marked by a frank eroticism. In addition to his figurative works, which include allegories and portraits, he painted landscapes. Among the artists of the Vienna Secession, Klimt was the most influenced by Japanese art and its methods.
