This lot consists of a framed, hand drawn mixed media (graphite and colored pencil) illustration on paper, attributed to the modern pop artist Roy Lichtenstein (American, 1923 -1997). "Roy Lichtenstein" is hand-written at bottom right. Image depicts a comic-book style couple looking at a piece of canvas artwork. A woman in a red dress stares at the painting with a reassuring expression, while the man stares stoically, yet contently at his painting. Overall the depiction has a slightly arrogant, or unsettling air. Piece is done in the bold, contemporary style made famous by Lichtenstein. Paper label en verso reads " Leo Castelli" along with a New York City address. Additionally "Roy Lichtenstein", "Study for Masterpiece", "(mixed media)" along with "1962" which presumably is a date.

Roy Lichtenstein was an American leader of the Pop Art movement, known for his tongue-in-cheek use of comic book and advertising motifs. Lichtenstein worked across mediums and has become a major luminary of modern art in America. The flat lines and color-blocked sterility of his images are counterpointed by the expressive poignancy of the details. His comic book characters, often overtly emotional, usually speak to universal human struggles or inner conflicts. Easily identifiable and easily connected with, the art of Roy Lichtenstein is a priceless addition to any collection.

Piece shows signs of aging including foxing and toning. Piece also has some discoloration and water stains -- heaviest along the bottom edge. Overall image and signature remain crisp and bold and continue to show very well.
