This lot consists of a hand-painted oil on canvas, attributed to the Modern artist Mark Rothko (American, 1903-1970). "MARK ROTHKO" hand-written en verso. Under the signature is the date "1955". This bold, color-blocked image depicts geometrical fields of pure color. Done in the understated, avant-garde style for which Rothko is so well known. This unframed piece measures approximately 24" x 18".

Mark Rothko, born Markus Yakovlevich Rothkowitz (Russian: September 25, 1903 – February 25, 1970), was an American painter of Russian Jewish descent. Although Rothko himself refused to adhere to any art movement, he is generally identified as an abstract expressionist.
