Description
Exceedingly RARE Cheese or Orange Knife - possibly a souvenir of St. Augustine, Florida. Inscribed on the steel blade in fancy script - St. AUGUSTINE, FLORIDA. Thick Sterling Silver handle, ornamented throughout with repousee decoration in high relief. Features the Florida State Coat-of-Arms up top, with a fruit-bearing branch. Also inscribed with the patent date - PAT. 2 '93. Marked on the other side of the blade by the maker - GREENLEAF & CROSBY CO. FLORIDA. Greenleaf & Crosby was a high-end jeweler from Jacksonville, Florida, founded in 1867, which later worked with the Gorham Co. and is now part of Betteridge Jewelers since 2006. N.B. Please, notice that this pattern was patented and the knife likely made BEFORE the Spanish-American War of 1898, after which Florida became officially part of the US.
Measurements: Approx. 8.2" long, the handle is 3.2" long and the blade - 5". Weighs about 34 grams or 1 1/4 oz. altogether.
