Description
Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1571-1638), "Tabvla Magellanica qua Tierrae del fuego, cum beleberrimis fretis a F. Magellano et I. Le Maire detectis novissima et accuratissima descriptio exhibetur," Amsterdam, ca. 1640.
This hand-colored map depicts the southern tip of South America, what is now Tierra del Fuego in Argentina and Magallanes in Chile. Tierra del Fuego is depicted as a peninsula attached to Cape Horn due to some confusion in the accounts of the 1615-1617 Le Maire and Schouten expedition. There is a dedication in the upper right corner to Constantijn Huygens reading "Nobili et Magnifico Viro, D. Constantino Hugenio Equiti, Domino in Zuylichem, et Illustrissimo Principi Auraico a Secretis, Hanc exactissimam Terrae Magellanicae descriptionem dedicat." It is surmounted by a coat of arms, which has been hand-colored with meticulous detail. Several ships are depicted in the ocean to the west of the landmass, underneath a cartouche elaborating on toponyms. A cartouche along the lower right corner contains a grid explaining the scale of latitude lines in the projection, with an illustration of a group of native Patagonians to the right.
