LECLERC GEORGES, COMTE DE BUFFON: (1707-1788) French Naturalist and Mathematician. He published during his lifetime 36 volumes of his Histoire Naturelle. The problem of Buffon´s needle in probability theory is named after him. Head of the Parisian ''Jardin du Roi'' (''King´s Garden'') 1739-88, under Kings Louis XV & Louis XVI, being instrumental in transforming it into a major research centre and museum.
