Description
A Pre-Columbian Maya incised brownware tripod vase of a type known from the ancient Tiquisate region of Guatemala, circa 600 A.D. - 900 A.D. This example measures approximately 5" tall by about 4 1/2" wide, and sits atop three nubbin style tripod feet. This type of Maya vessel is well-documented in Nicholas Hellmuth's book "The Escuintla Hoards", in which he cites such examples as evidence of early Teotihucan influence in the Maya regions of Guatemala. Hellmuth interprets the incised designs to represent cartouched reptilian eye glyphs on opposing sides, separated by iconography he believes to represent the coiled central antenna of a butterfly or moth- all imagery he believes to have been imported from Teotihucan influence in the region. Remnants of red Cinnabar remain in some areas of the incised designs. Reference: See Hellmuth's book "The Escuintla Hoards: Teotihuacan Art in Guatemala", pages 33 & 34 for numerous examples of this exact type.
