Description
Pre-Columbian, Maya territories, Late Classic, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A hand-built bichrome pottery cylinder vase on small tripod feet, its exterior walls retaining red iconography on a light grey ground. The composition features incised, twin opposing rectangular registers, each containing a seated cross-legged chief or dignitary, wearing an elaborate headdress, arms folded across their chests, legs crossed - each one framed by vertical bands of schematized chevrons. A decorated cylinder vessel like this one was almost certainly used for the ritual pouring of the cacao drink, the most popular drink in Maya territories, into larger cylinders, thus producing a frothy foam on top that was the preferred way of serving it. Size: 4.875" in diameter x 6.25" H (12.4 cm x 15.9 cm)
