Description
This is a square seal made of russet-brown Shoushan soapstone, originating from China and dating back to the early 20th century. The top of the seal is intricately carved with a design depicting cloud scrolls, while one side bears the signature "Tong Danian." The seal face possibly features the inscription "treasure by Renwu." The soapstone itself showcases a rich russet-brown color with distinct dark brown and pale striations, giving it a unique appearance. The height of the seal measures approximately 2 inches (5 cm). The present collector acquired this piece from Christie's New York in March 2013 as part of "The Collection of Robert Hatfield Ellsworth Part IV - Chinese Works of Art: Metalwork, Sculpture and Early Ceramics" auction.
