Description
IMPORTANT, RARE, 18th C. QING DYNASTY, Qianlong REIGN PERIOD (AD 1736-1796),
THE TEN-THOUSANDS PEARLS EMBROIDERY SILK IMPERIAL DRAGON ROBE
PROVENANCE:
From the private collections of Madame Kimball, of Boston, Massachusetts; by inheritance. ORIGINAL RECEIPTS, Records bought from GRANDE MAISON DE BLANC, 6 Boulevard des Capucines, 6; Paris. Dated 16 Aug 1869. Dealers in Works of Art & Antiques Fine Silk Tapestry and Novelties, etc.
The robe wealthy decorated with hundreds of natural pearls each are elaborately seamed upon the dragon motifs, cleverly simulating the dragon's scales. On the chest elegantly displayed the imperial five-clawed dragon and five smaller attendant dragons borne from turbulent cresting waves, the dragons detailed with ferocious faces and scaly bodies, writhing amongst stylized clouds and flame wisps surrounded with fumes clouds and flames; all delicately embroidered against bright-imperial-yellow silk ground.
The image of the five-clawed dragon can be considered the ultimate reflection of the Qianlong emperor's imperial splendor. The works displayed a unique and rare artifact, shows a masterly craftsmanship.
The Dragon Robe is displayed inside a wooden-box frame (New Frame), matted on black velvet ground (Demountable), and royal blue matting border behind acrylic glass.
