Description
Mid 19th century, 135 x 115 cm, Central Anatolia
In the apricot field, very beautifully drawn elibelinde designs in dark red and blue combine into a repeat of steep colour diagonals. The wide, dark red main border contains large blossoms in the horizontal bands and diagonal crosses composed of S-motifs in the vertical bands. A further example of this very rare group of Konya village rugs was selected by Brüggemann & Böhmer as the cover illustration of the book on the 1980 Frankfurt exhibition. The design harks back to older predecessors, such as a carpet in the Vakiflar Museum, Istanbul (inv. no. 130) and an even older example in the Türk ve Islam Eserleri Museum, Istanbul (inv. no. 350). – The upper left corner is missing, otherwise well preserved with a high pile.
BRÜGGEMANN, WERNER & BÖHMER, HARALD, Teppiche der Bauern und Nomaden in Anatolien. Hanover 1980, no. 1 *** TURKISH REPUBLIC MINISTRY OF CULTURE AND TOURISM (publ.), Turkish Handwoven Carpets. Catalog no: 1. Ankara 1987, 0059 and vol. 2, 0123
