Description
Fine example of a uniform belonging to an as of yet unidentified American major general 'Collins', complete with stars, ribbons and visor cap. We do know that Major General Collins served in the infantry in combat in the Pacific in World War II in at least two campaigns, fighting with the famous 23rd Infantry Division 'Americal'. His ribbons also indicate much post-war service as well. This Army green uniform is undated inside but is ca. 1950's to the 1970's. It is fully lined and also partially quilted. In the inside pocket is a maker's tag identifying it to: 'R22468.Q B.G. Collins' along with a maker's label from 'WB Weintraub Brothers & Company'. Each shoulder epaulette has two silver, hollow-back hallmarked and matching general's stars, and each lapel has matching 'U.S.' insignia. A 2nd Army patch is sewn to the left shoulder, and Collins' past service is indicated by the 23rd Infantry Division 'Americal' patch on the opposite shoulder. Pinned on the upper left breast pocket is his 'Collins' name tag. This is a correct replacement as his original was missing when the grouping was obtained by our consignor. Pinned to the left breast is a Combat Infantryman's Badge, and beneath is a custom made eight award ribbon bar. This bar shows that Collins fought in at least two campaigns in the Pacific. He also has a Basic Qualification, Marksman, 1st Class Gunner Badge, for the Rifle. Each lower sleeve cuff has the wide black mohair cloth rings indicating General Officer status. Buttons are of the two-piece eagle types and are backmarked and matching. Some of the buttons have been reattached. Also present are Collins' matching general's striped trousers with label from the same tailor, as well his service visor. To complete this uniform, our consignor added a correct 1964 dated khaki color shirt, and a correct 1968 dated black tie. Fine condition, and worthy of further research. From a major private collection on public display.
