Description
American Civil War brass name stencil belonging to Private Allen J. Eggleston of the 2nd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery. Stencil presents naming "A.J. EGGLESTON. BAT. M. 2. PA ART" and measures 1.25" x 3.5" and exhibits an uncleaned patina. Allen J. Eggleston (1842-1910) was born in Syracuse, New York and enlisted in Luzern County, Pennsylvania and was mustered into Battery M of the 2nd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery on August 19, 1862. He was wounded severely at the battle of Chaffin's Farm, Virginia on September 29, 1864 in his right forearm. His wound resulted in a medical amputation of that forearm while in a hospital in Philadelphia. Eggleston was discharged for wounds on January 2, 1865. During his service with the regiment he participated in the battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, and Fort Harrison (Chapin's Farm). After his military service Eggleston was in the mercantile business in West Pittston. He died on January 24, 1910 in Wyoming, Pennsylvania and is buried in the West Pittston Cemetery in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Stencil is accompanied by carte-de-visite identified on reverse in ink "Allen Eggleston". CDV shows subject full standing in uniform holding kepi with oilcloth cover. CDV presents backmark of Winter, North Salina St., Syracuse N.Y. and 2-cent United States Revenue Playing Card tax stamp. CDV exhibits wear with corner bumping and stain on obverse at upper right away from subject. Provenance: Gary Wolfer collection.
