Description
A scrap of blue fabric with attached brass tassels from the fly end of the battle flag of the 9th Maine Vol. infantry, housed in a period envelope with inked manuscript text reading: ‘A piece of the 9th Maine Battle Flag’ The piece of fabric is circa 4 inches long and the four woven brass tassels are 2.5 inches. The 9th Maine Vol. Infantry was organized on Sept. 22, 1861. The regiment was assigned to General Sherman’s expedition sent to capture Port Royal, S.C., landing on Hilton head on Nov. 8, 1861. Was sent to Warsaw island of Georgia coast on Feb. 7, 62 to join expedition to capture Fernandina, Fla.. They were the first regiment landed and the first to take the town. Returned to Hilton Head in Jan. of 63 and then to Helena island under Gen. Strong for the assault on Morris island, S.C. where the regiment captured the rifle pits in front of the fort. They them took part in the assaults on Fort Wagner on July 11, 18 & Sept. 6th with the loss of over 300 men. The attack on the 18th was when the 54th Mass. Vol. Infantry, led by Col. Robert Shaw with his African American regiment met disaster with Union losses being more than 1500, including Shaw and many of his regiment. The regiment remained at Black & Morris islands until their enlistment was up. 416 members reenlisted along with a number of other later recruits and in the spring of 64 they were transferred to the army of the Potomac and arrived at Gloucester Point, Va. on April 22, 64. The 9th fought in the following battles, Drewry’s Bluff, Bermuda Hundred, losing 52 men, Cold Harbor, with loss of 70 men, assaults on Petersburg, Deep Bottom, Fort Gilmer, Darbytown Road, were they lost 48 men. Sent to Chaffin’s farm and ordered to fort Fisher in 1865 and joined Sherman’s Army at Cox’s bridge and then went to Raleigh, N.C., until July 13, 1865 when they were mustered out.
