Native American, Southwestern United States, Anasazi (Ancestral Puebloan), ca. 1075 to 1250 CE. An ensemble of three pottery ladle fragments from the ancient Anasazi. The first ladle has an ovoid body with a deep basin adorned with traces of vertical black stripes. The second fragment has a wider body, a handle base, and faint triangular motifs within the basin. The largest fragment has roughly half of the original handle still attached to the bowl, and a trio of dark lines courses around the upper basin walls. Size of largest (three lines): 6.4" L x 5.1" W (16.3 cm x 13 cm).
Provenance: ex-Joan Shaw collection, bought in 1971; loaned to the Mesa Verde Museum, 1962-1970; ex-Bill Mitchell collection, Cortez, Colorado, USA, from 1958-1962

Condition
All items are fragments of larger pottery ladles. Smallest fragment repaired from multiple pieces, with chips and adhesive residue along break lines. All items have nicks and abrasions to rims, handle bases, and basins, with fading to original pigmentation. Nice earthen deposits and faint traces throughout and traces of dark pigment within basins. Old museum inventory numbers written in black ink beneath each base.
