Description
This is a Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad Handlan switchmans lantern. This is another excellent restoration from the Matthews collection. In fact, he noted that this was one of the most challenging restorations, simply because it had 3 different layers of paint on it---gray, white, and red, and the goal was just to get back to the original metal! However, all of the layers of paint actually helped to protect the original, 100 plus year of gray metal of the era, and it came out without any pitting, and in near original color! Fine silvery-gray tinware throughout, with M.K.& T. R.R. cast on the rim. Metal has been protected with a rubdown of Clenzoil to avoid any future rust or discoloration. Lid also has its original bail retainer. Clear cast extended top and extended base barrel globe with MK&T RY etched on the front of the globe. Correct fount, which sits in a twist-off removable fount cup, with a brass burner. Patent dates on the bottom are worn, but are 1909, 1910, and 1912. A fine example!
