Description
This gorgeous suzani of the ruijo type with an empty white central field and a flat gable at the upper end is striking on account of its unusual dimensions. The nine large circular blossoms of the wide main border have a double surround of vines. The inner vines show ivy-type leaves while the outer vines bear polychrome flowers in light and brilliant colours. Two smaller blossoms lie above the gable. The narrow outer border is decorated with a green vine that connects small fan-shaped blossoms.
The double surrounds of the large blossoms prove that this suzani is from Karshi. They are embroidered in three different types of stitch (yurma, kanda khayol and basma) which also occur side by side in the blossoms. The outlines of the vines and the small blossoms are embroidered in the yurma stitch.
The suzani consists of four vertical bands of different widths and a narrow horizontal band at the upper end. This splendid embroidery appears oversized for a simple home used by the rural population. It was probably made in an urban workshop for the house of a wealthy client.
Minimal damage to the sides, a number of stains. The sides are backed with strips of a silk ikat, no fabric backing.
