Description
A fine old carved wooden ceremonial staff with a deep well handled surface patina and featuring a kneeling devotee with hands raised supporting the axe symbol at the top of the staff. Shango is the Yoruba god of thunder and lightning, the double-axe motif atop this piece is a metaphor for the thunderbolt that Shango hurls down from the sky at those who do not respect him. The staff measures 15 inches tall on custom display stand. Yoruba peoples, Nigeria, Africa. Provenance: Ex Karl & Wilma Zabel Collection, New York, also a private New Jersey collection.
