Description
mid 19th century, 261 x 96 cm, South East Caucasus
SCHÃœRMANN, ULRICH, Caucasian Rugs. Ramsdell 1974, no. 58
A large elongated Lenkoran medallion with powerful hooks at its tips adorns each end of the light blue field. A yellow box-shaped cartouche with a cruciform interior drawing is placed between them as the central motif of the composition and surrounded by four octagons. The border ornamentation, knotting structure and palette indicate that the rug belongs to the Talish group. Schurmann has published another Talish featuring the same Lenkoran field design.
Obvious signs of age and wear, a number of repiled areas. Cut and rebound sides, both ends slightly reduced. Provenance: Ehrengard Freifrau von Trotha Collection. Formerly in the collection of Peter-Christian Graf von Kleist-Retzow
