Description
This is a Chicago Junction Railroad Adams and Westlake switchmans lanter. Super rare and hard to find! The railroad began with the merger of several other railroads in 1898, and in 1907 its outer belt became the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad. The rest of the CJ RY was bought by the New York Central in 1922. The CJ RY only owned 32 miles of track and used a total of 142 miles through lease agreements or trackage rights, so artifacts from this railroad are very difficult to find! One of the grandchildren of one of our staff thought the CJ RR on the lantern stood for Cheetah-Jaguar Railroad, and when asked why, alluded to the interesting wear patterns in the tinware, which reminded him of the spots on a cheetah or leopard! There is excellent tinware on the rim and chimney, but the fount holder and some of the cage exhibits interesting spots! C.J. Ry is cast on the rim of the lantern. Patent dates are 1895, 1908, and 1909. Has a plain, clear, extended base globe. Correct Adlake fount and Adlake brass burner. Double guard model. Excellent shiny tinware on this rare example!
