Description
second half 19th century, 270 x 135 cm, South West Anatolia
BÖHMER, HARALD, Nomaden in Anatolien. Ganderkesee 2004, ill. p. 221 *** RIPPON BOSWELL, A 46, 16 November 1996, lot 106
The central field of this nomad kilim woven in the Fethiye region is an empty, plain red space with multiple abrash that is surrounded on all sides by a band of small blue points. The two end panels offer a sharp contrast. They are each decorated with two huge hooked diamonds and nested, sharply serrated diamond halves offset against them. These bold motifs in brilliant and diverse colours make the kilim a particularly attractive example of its group. The composition takes account of its function as a camel trapping. When the kilim was placed across the camel’s back, only the aprons presenting typical motifs of the tribe were visible.
Minimal signs of wear, very good overall condition, original finishes all around.
