These large flatweaves by the nomadic Kungrat tribe of Uzbekistan are called pallas. Our example consists of nine joined horizontal stripes, each with an identical design of four large octagonal guls containing a cross motif with hooked ends. The designs are embroidered onto the kilim foundation. Our pallas did not have lateral borders, as in the three comparative pieces mentioned below, but there might have been an additional design stripe at the two ends of the field, as in the Pallas published by Herrmann.
The original finish is missing at the top and bottom, good overall condition.
