Description
These small-format trappings (khalyk) featuring a horizontal panel and two lateral arms were almost invariably produced by the Tekke tribe. They were only used on the wedding day. When the bride, seated in a veiled litter on the back of a camel, was led to her husband’s family, a khalyk would be hung over the bridal litter. Since these trappings were precious decorative objects of highly symbolic meaning, the excellent quality of almost all the 100 surviving Tekke khalyks is not surprising.
During the course of the past few decades, Rippon Boswell has probably published more khalyks than any other auctioneers. In this very beautiful, previously unknown example from a French collection, the long decorative fringe is completely preserved. The polychrome wrapping of the cords produces a design of steep gables. Another khalyk with a complete decorative fringe was sold by us in 1993 in our auction A 39 (lot 106).
Cut vertically and rejoined near the inner side of the right arm, one restored stripe at the outer edge at the top right. Otherwise in very good condition, with the pile at its full height.
