Description
ca. 1800 or earlier, 253 x 194 cm, Central Asia, West Turkestan
TSAREVA, ELENA, Turkmen Carpets. The Hoffmeister Collection. Stuttgart 2011, no. 30
Very fine in weave, this Tekke main carpet has a brown-red field decorated with 4 x 9 large, immaculately drawn primary guls and chemche secondary guls in a spacious layout. The main border contains octagons filled with four stars that are separated by a variety of dividing designs. The lack of any secondary borders is a characteristic feature of early Tekke main carpets. The dark palette indicates that the rug was woven in the Balkhan region.
Signs of age and wear, minor repairs and repiled areas. Cut sides, replaced selvedges, somewhat reduced lower finish. Provenance: Peter Hoffmeister Collection, Dorfles-Esbach
