Description
second half 19th century, 295 x 144 cm, North West Afghanistan, Herat
BLACK, DAVID & LOVELESS, CLIVE, Rugs of the Wandering Baluchi. London 1976, no. 38 *** BAUSBACK, PETER, Antike Teppiche. Sammlung Franz Bausback 1987 / 88. Mannheim 1987, ill. p. 181
The Timuri tribes live mainly in the region to the west of Herat. The high quality of this large main carpet with a fine weave and a precisely drawn design is a striking feature. The pile consists of lustrous wool in deep luminous colours. Long hooked cartouches, presumably depicting geometrically stylised trees, are arranged as offset rows in the field. A Turkmen wavy vine undulates through the red main border. The elaborately worked flatwoven finishes are preserved at both ends. Two comparative examples were published by Black / Loveless and Bausback.
Very good condition.
