Item Details
Description
18th century, 301 x 169 cm, Central Asia, West Turkestan

This very beautiful Karadashli main carpet features three vertical rows of ten large tauk nuska guls that are spaciously arranged in the aubergine-ground field. The cartouches within the guls contain eight-pointed stars. The cruciform secondary guls occur in two variations. From the fourth horizontal row onwards, their centre is a small diamond. A Turkmen wavy vine with large star-shaped blossoms in the vertical bands and curled leaves in the horizontal bands constitutes the main border design. The knotted elems are embellished with offset rows of flowers of the pekvesh type.

In the past, this rug would have been described as a "Yomut". Now a more precise classification is possible, and it can be attributed to the Karadashli, a Yomut tribal group. The generous composition, the perfection of drawing seen in all the designs and the quality of the colours are indications that this main carpet dates to the 18th century.

Signs of age and wear, uniformly low pile. One major and several small restored areas in the field. Cut and rebound sides, both ends slightly reduced.
