mid 19th century, 260 x 193 cm, Central Asia, West Turkestan
LOGES, WERNER, Turkmenische Teppiche. Munich 1978, no. 1 *** SPUHLER, FRIEDRICH, KÖNIG, HANS & VOLKMANN, MARTIN, Alte Orientteppiche. Munich 1978, no. 75
A classic main carpet of the Tekke tribe. The brick-red field displays a repeat of 4 x 10 large, immaculately drawn primary guls and chemche secondary guls. The star-filled octagons of the main border are separated by dividing stripes patterned in diverse designs. The light colours are an indication that this beautiful example was woven in the Akhal oasis.
Completely preserved, original finishes all around, one long repiled stripe at the centre of the field, occasional minor repiled areas. Reduced and damaged upper kilim finish. Good overall condition, high pile.
