Description
first quarter 20th century, 212 x 138 cm, Western Central Persia, Chahar Mahal
WILLBORG, PETER, Chahâr Mahal va Bakhtiâri. Stockholm 2002, nos. 231, 318 and 319
An old Bakhtiari from a village in the Chahar Mahal region. The tree design with poplars, weeping willows and smaller trees crowned with a blossom is a mirrored composition around five large trees with spreading branches on the central axis of the red field. It harks back to Khorasan models and is called "bid majnun" (weeping willow) in Iran. Willborg has illustrated several carpets with this popular field design.
New overcasting along the sides, both ends somewhat reduced. Slight signs of wear in the pile.
