Description
first half 19th century, 68 x 124 cm, Central Asia, West Turkestan
PINNER, ROBERT, The Rickmers Collection. Turkoman Rugs. Berlin 1993, no. 48
This white-ground Karadashli asmalyk displays a tree design of nine trunks decorated with erre guls that are arranged in diagonal colour bands running from right to left. The trees are linked by serrated leaves which combine into a hexagonal lattice. In the border, serrated red ashik guls alternate with double arrows. The vibrant style of the drawing and the intensity of the colours suggest a date in the first half of the 19th century.
Good condition, original finishes all around. The decorative cords at the lower end are preserved. Provenance: Ehrengard Freifrau von Trotha Collection. Formerly in the collection of Peter-Christian Graf von Kleist-Retzow
