Description
early 19th century, 41 x 102 cm, Central Asia, West Turkestan
TSAREVA, ELENA, Turkmen Carpets. The Hoffmeister Collection. Stuttgart 2011, no. 51
This early Tekke torba presenting eight very large, rounded chuval guls, chemche secondary guls and a kochanak border was woven by a tribal group in the Balkhan region. The dark red ground colour is an indication of this provenance. The small eight-pointed stars in the narrow elem and the horizontal band at the upper end are a rare feature. Very fine weave, cloth-like handle, the pile wool feels like velvet.
Cut and rebound sides, five small repiled areas. No back. Provenance: Peter Hoffmeister Collection, Dorfles-Esbach
