Description
second quarter 20th century, 375 x 181 cm, North Persia, Varamin
COOTNER, CATHRYN, Flat-Woven Textiles. The Arthur D. Jenkins Collection. Vol. I. Washington D.C. 1981, no. 34 *** TANAVOLI, PARVIZ, Persian Flatweaves. Woodbridge 2002, pl. 90
This very large slit tapestry was woven in the Garmsar area by a Shahsavan tribal group who had migrated to the Varamin region during the 19th century. Characteristic of the provenance, its repeat consists of elongated hexagons in varying ground colours. The distribution of their colours results in diagonal colour bands. Each hexagon encloses a serrated diamond. The dark blue ground of the field appears as a net-like lattice between the designs. The field is surrounded by a reciprocal trefoil border in blue and black-brown.
Very good condition, original finishes all around.
