Description
second half 19th century, 295 x 196 cm, South Caucasus, Azerbaijan
HERRMANN, EBERHART, Seltene Orientteppiche 4. Munich 1982, no. 16 *** WRIGHT, RICHARD & WERTIME, JOHN, Caucasian Carpets & Covers. The Weaving Culture. London 1995, pl. XVIII
The term “sileh” used to be obligatory for these large carpets in the sumakh technique, which were always woven in two separate panels and later joined in the middle. Today they are called “dragon verneh”. Our example with 16 S-shaped stylised rectangular dragon figures in white and dark blue is finely woven on a red warp and has gorgeous colours.
Minor holes and darned areas, slight damage to the side finishes. Very good overall condition, original finishes all around.
