Description
second half 19th century, 178 x 101 cm, North East Caucasus
In a brown field that is highly corroded in places, a diamond lattice of fine triple lines encloses large star-shaped blossoms. The white main border featuring a leaf and calyx vine is flanked by two reciprocal trefoil borders in different colour combinations. Identical border designs are encountered in Shirvan rugs. Less finely woven than the latter and drawn in a specific palette of mellow colours which include pastel shades, our example was made in Daghestan in the North East Caucasus. The consignor purchased the rug decades ago at Galerie Ostler in Munich.
Good condition, the original selvedges survive.
