I bought a Henri Rousseau print as a small gift for my neighbor's daughter as she likes it. I got it with one offline bid and it turned out the cost I paid was many times the auction result price in the US. I don't blame anyone paying this price because I did not do any research on the print and on this auction house, especially as an experienced bidder. Even I paid a lot higher a price it is not an expensive piece in any case. I just did not bother and believed the auction house should have done their diligent work and I have trusted their estimated evaluation. While this was not the case. After I won it I found they sold only a dozen pieces among 178 items listed which means to me at least, most of the items were overpriced. I checked their history and basically they were the same. I said, as in my other cases, I don't blame paying higher if I did not do a proper study and made a mistake. But I did mind if an Auction House did not make reasonably estimated evaluations and overprice everything far higher beyond market level. The diligent work and good quality evaluations are the fundamentals of the auction business, to my best understanding at least. If there are no trusts between bidders with the Auctioneers, there will be no auction business. Normally to be neutral an auctioneer should not be an agent as well as a seller, as a footballer cant be a judge at the same time. In this case, even I can't be 100 % sure I do feel this Auction house is an auctioneer at the same time the seller. They rotating the same items many times as a shop. At last, I don't mind making a mistake, most of us made a lot with this hobby. But I do mind if a shop is selling things at a very high price level already and still they charge me a commission because I am one of the silly customers, and furthermore they call them an Auctioneer.
